Aventis destroys transgenic rice
(May 21, 2001 – CropChoice news) – Aventis this week began burying 5 million pounds of transgenic rice that a Texas farmer grew under contract. Wishing to avoid another StarLink debacle, the company decided to destroy the herbicide-resistant crop, rather than risk its being shipped abroad for famine relief. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the rice for domestic consumption. But abroad, the rice has neither approval nor consumer acceptance.
