Nanjing Institute produces report critical of Bt cotton

(June 4, 2002 – CropChoice news) – A report from the Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences, part of the State Environment Protection Administration, alleges that Monsanto’s Bt cotton has damaged the environment. Specifically, it asserts that the genetically modified cotton encourages the spread of other varieties of insect pests and that the bollworm it’s designed to control likely will develop resistance to the insecticidal cotton within a decade.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences reportedly is working on a paper its hopes will refute the Nanjing report.
