UK authorities suspend GM crop trials following discovery of unauthorized varieties

(Aug. 16, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- UK government ministers have suspended genetically engineered crop trials following the discovery of an unauthorized type of engineered oilseed rape in 14 fields in England and Scotland, according to a story in today's edition of The Independent. These modified plants contain an extra gene that makes them resistant to two types of antibiotics.

The European Union has sought an end to all genetically engineered plants with this marker because of concerns that human and non-human animals who eat them could develop immunity to the drugs.

Aventis CropScience, the biotechnology company responsible for producing the plants, could face heavy fines over the contamination incident.
