Let the trade war over biotech food begin

(Monday, Aug. 26, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- Robert Zoellick, the U.S. trade representative, plans to lodge a complaint with the World Trade Organization about the European Union moratorium on the importation of genetically modified crops, according to the Sunday Aug. 25 edition of the Independent newspaper. Part of an American government frustrated by the inability of agribusiness companies to sell most food products with genetically modified organisms to markets in Europe, Zoellick will argue that the moratorium restrains trade and, therefore, should be disallowed under WTO rules.
