Good news for ethanol, here and abroad

(Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- The Energy bill awaiting completion by Congressional members returning from their recess contains a provision that would triple the use of ethanol and other renewable fuels to about 5 billion gallons by 2012. This could increase farm income by $700 million, reduce the trade deficit by $4.45 billion and create 13,500 jobs, according to USDA analysts.

Meanwhile, the leaders of Brazil and Germany are completing talks on a $43 million, 10-year program to build 100,000 vehicles that run on ethanol. The effort will be part of the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol on global warming.
