UK turns to Brazil for soybeans (Aug 14, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- The United Kingdom likely will increase its soybean exports to 1.05 million metric tons this year. Half of that total is coming from Brazil, according to a USDA Foreign Agricultural Service report.
These high imports of Brazilian beans are expected to keep purchase of U.S. soybeans low.
UK food manufacturers have generally switched to using alternative non-biotech ingredients, replacing soybean oil with rapeseed oil. According to the trade, however, soybean oil is still being used in the catering industry.
Despite the improving biotechnology climate, rapeseed oil also continues to displace soybean oil.
The American Soybean Association has been actively collaborating with UK institutions to promote non-food use of US soybean oil in areas such as material for manufacturing ink.
