International scientists demonstrate GMO transferance to weeds

(Aug. 16, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- US, UK and French research teams say they've demonstrated that when weeds cross-polllinate with genetically engineered crops they become stronger. French scientists have shown that weeds might easily swap genes with genetically engineered varieties of sugar beets being grown in open field trials.

Jeremy Sweet of the National Institute for Agricultural Botany in Cambridge, UK, told the New Scientist magazine: "If you're worried about a gene which alters the fitness of wild populations, then stopping the GM plant breeding has got to be a good thing."
