Monsanto questions GM report claims (Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 -- CropChoice news) --
ABC News Online, 09/20/02:Genetically-modified (GM) crop
manufacturer Monsanto says a report
claiming GM products have been a
failure in the United States does not
correspond with the figures.
The report by Britain's main certifier of organic
food, the UK Soil Association, claims GM crops
have not delivered the benefits US farmers were
promised.
But Monsanto spokesman Brian Arnst says in
North America there has been a 15 per cent
increase in GM acreage each year since 1996.
He says the technology is already seen in 30 per
cent of corn, 50 per cent of cotton and 70 per
cent of soya beans.
He says that does not sound like failure.
"There's a lot of reasons farmers are using these
crops. They're more flexible, they believe
they're better for the environment," he said.
"At the end of the day farmers are better off.
That sort of information...would seem to be
opposite to what they're claiming in this soil
report."
