Chinese scientists develop moth-killing rice

(July 13, 2001 -- CropChoice news) -- Chinese scientists at Zhejiang University have developed two varieties of transgenic rice to resist moths.

The new rice secretes a toxin to kill the leaf- and stalk-eating moths, which, according to scientists, affect about 10 million hectares of rice crops per year.

No word on yields or the potential for the moths to develop resistance to the insecticidal rice.
