Monsanto settles with Nelsons in soybean seed dispute

(Nov. 1, 2001 – CropChoice news) – Roger, Rodney and Greg Nelson have agreed to a settlement with Monsanto in its lawsuit against them. The St. Louis-based biotechnology and chemical corporation had alleged that the North Dakota family of farmers had infringed the patent on its Roundup-resistant soybeans – popularly known as Roundup Ready – by saving the seed for their own use.

The Nelsons denied the claims. Neither crop test results that seemed to confirm their innocence nor a North Dakota State Seed Arbitration Board finding of no wrongdoing on their part dissuaded Monsanto from dropping the case.

The settlement includes a confidentiality agreement.
