G8 leaders avoid agriculture, trade issues during summit

(Tuesday, June 3, 2003 -- CropChoice news) -- By the end of their summit yesterday in Evian, France, leaders of the G8 industrialized nations had not taken action on agriculture and trade, including the thorny issue of genetically modified crops, according to news reports in the Washington Post and Reuters.

Phil Twyford of British charity Oxfam told Reuters: "Not only are there no firm commitments, even their rhetoric is watered down compared with last year. Trade is missing in action."
