Sowing seeds of doubt

(Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003 -- CropChoice news) -- The Council of Canadians, the National Farmersí Union Canada, the Saskatchewan Organic Directorate , and the Parkland Institute embarked on a campaign today in Winnipeg, Manitoba to sow seeds of doubt about genetically modified wheat.

Today's press conference and forum was the first of 11 at which representatives of the groups and the U.S. Farmer to Farmer Campaign on Genetic Engineering will warn the public about what they regard as the dangers of allowing Monsanto to commercialize the wheat it genetically engineered to resist the glyphosate herbicide.

Their "Planting Seeds of Doubt" tour will focus on genetic contamination of traditional crops, the loss of biodiversity, the inability to save seeds for replanting, the potential market loss for wheat farmers, and the rural-urban resistance against wheat resistant to Roundup, Monsanto's trade name for glyphosate.
