Italy's largest miller won't buy GM wheat

(Aug. 7, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- Grandi Molini Italiani, the largest miller in Italy (which itself has the largest grain milling industry in Europe) announced on Monday that it would not import any genetically modified wheat because of consumer rejection. The company CEO added that it also likely will not buy wheat from any country that grows transgenic varieties to avoid the possibility of genetic contamination of conventional wheat.

Although Monsanto has stated that it will delay the planned 2005 introduction of Roundup Ready wheat, genetically engineered to resist the herbicide Roundup, the company still is pursuing U.S. regulatory approval of the variety.
