US farm group against part of EU transgenic food proposals

(June 13, 2001 – CropChoice news) – The National Corn Growers Association dislikes a key component of the new European Union proposals for regulating transgenic foods. They are aimed at restarting the process – stalled since 1998 – for approving new varieties of these crops.

The corporate- and member-sponsored National Corn Growers Association dislikes the provision that will test for and certify transgenic ingredients at each stage in the manufacturing process. European Union leaders say this is necessary to accurately trace and label food products.
