GMO insurance coverage difficult to get in Australia (Nov. 27, 2001 -- CropChoice news) -- Not only is insurance coverage for genetically engineered crops hard to come by in New Zealand, as we mentioned in our Nov. 14 opinion piece, but the same is true in Australia. The insurance industry there acknowledged its reticence to insure the biotechnology-agribusiness conglomerates against litigation. That could mean, according to Farmers Weekly Interactive, that farmers who grow such crops could be liable if they cross pollinate with a neighbor's organic or conventional varieties, trigger allergic reactions in people who eat the food, or lead to the development of mutant weeds.
