Potato sales to Japan falling because of GMO presence (Nov. 24, 2001 -- CropChoice news) -- The National Potato Promotion Board is pushing potato growers and processors to ramp up testing for the presence of genetically engineered varieties in the wake of falling sales to Japan and Korea.
Sales of dehydrated potatoes to Japan have fallen by almost 40 percent since May due to the presence of transgenic varieties in snack products, according to AgWeb.com. To prevent a further drop in sales because of biotech varieties, which consumers in Japan and Korea want to avoid, the Potato Promotion Board is investing $600,000 in testing infrastructure.
