Dry conditions might lead to less non-GM canola

(July 9, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- If the European Union wants canola, it might have to settle for the genetically modified kind. This is according to a story on the Australian Broadcasting Company today. Farmers might deal with dry conditions there by not planting as much canola as usual, rural merchant Michael White told ABC News Radio. That could force Europe to turn to Canada and its transgenic fare.

Meanwhile, in Brazil, Monsanto is investing R$1.5 million into about 30 transgenic BT cotton research projects.

According to a story in the Gazeta Mercantil, research that Monsanto and the Instituto Agronomico do Parana found that the Bt cotton cut production costs by 25 percent, including less use of insecticides.
