USDA begins its purchase of StarLink contaminated corn seed (March 23, 2001 --Cropchoice news) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has commenced with its plan to spend $20 million to buy 400,000 bags of corn seed possibly contamintated with StarLink. It has sent contracts to 300 seed companies.
After the USDA's Commodity Credit Corporation buys the corn seed, officials will test it for StarLink's Cry9c protein. The government will destroy the seed.
The deadline for seed companies to participate in the program is April 15. However, those that Aventis licenses are not eligible to participate.
