China getting stricter about ag biotech? (May 31, 2002 – CropChoice news) – Officials from China’s State Environmental Protection Administration have said that pending legislation granting the government authority to regulate the use of agricultural biotechnology products is needed because of their unknown long term health and environmental effects.
According to Dow Jones news service, a recent Chinese report found that the "initial success of some genetically-modified pest-resistant plant strains had been short-lived, requiring greater inputs of pesticides and increasing potential environmental damage… Certain genetically modified food products might also have negative impacts on human health that are visible only in the long term."
Meanwhile, the government told Brazil that its soybeans won’t face delays on soybean imports because of the South American country’s non-gmo policy.
